Growing up in a refugee camp, I had to rely on plastic for survival. Playing soccer with discarded plastics, using plastic bags to start a fire for cooking, and using tarps to stay dry are some of my fondest childhood memories. These experiences taught me to be innovative and creative in addressing challenges and fulfilling my dreams. Now however, after relocating to the United States, I was struck by how ubiquitous plastic had become in modern society. While I recognized its necessity in many areas of daily life, I also became aware of the harm it can cause to our planet and our health. This duality of utility and danger, combined with my personal experience, motivated me to explore plastic in my artwork in my own style. I aim to challenge conventional perceptions of both materials and art, using plastic to create pieces that prompt reflection on our relationship with this ubiquitous substance and how it affects our bodies and culture. This interplay between material and emotional understanding lies at the core of my artistic practice.
During my undergraduate studies, I created a series of paintings that were deeply inspired by my personal experiences and stories. Each piece reflected my innermost emotions, beliefs, and struggles, and served as a medium for me to express myself in a way that was both therapeutic and artistic. I drew inspiration from the people, places, and events that had shaped my life, and sought to capture their essence through color, form, and texture. Through my paintings, I aimed to create a visual narrative of my life, one that was both honest and authentic, and that resonated with the experiences of others. Each painting was a journey of self-discovery, and I hope that they can inspire others to explore their own stories and find their own creative voice.
